Designer Love: Mary Katrantzou

Mary Katrantzou, a Greek designer, is known for her artistry in textile design. After studying at some of the most prestigious art schools in America (Rhode Island School of Design) and London (Central Saint Martins), she earned a sponsorship from the British Fashion Council to create her first six seasons. Since then, the fashion industry has breathlessly awaited each of Katrantzou’s new designs.

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 10.31.55 PM

Since her first collection hit the runways in 2009, Mary Katrantzou’s designs have captivated the fashion world. Combining vibrant, chaotic prints and patterns with staggering silhouettes, the Athens-born designer creates pieces that are as much art as they are clothing.

Complex digital prints and sculptural designs draw inspiration from a variety of seemingly unlikely sources – Faberge eggs and Victorian interiors, Girl Scout badges and vintage lampshades. Despite this riot of elements, Katrantzou always manages to bring her pieces together through shape, pattern, form and color, the end result breathtaking and original.

Katrantzou is inspired by a cacophony of texture and architecture – her father was a textile designer, her mother an interior designer – both of which she studied while in school. Called the “queen of digital print,” the designer names art as an integral part of her design aesthetic, essential to the brand identity she is trying to establish. And establish it she has. Katrantzou creates wearable art in each and every collection she puts forth, in pieces unique yet cohesive.

Her Spring/Summer 2015 collection is inspired by Pangaea, evoking movement, that pulling and shifting of once-static objects. The silhouettes are soft, fluid, rendered in light fabrics such as summer wool and weightless tulle. In this line, Katrantzou combines the organic and the geometric, the abstract and the rigid, meshing together interesting textiles and shapes to form a complex puzzle of design.

Katrantzou says she is inspired by women who can blur the line between design and art, who enjoy merging mismatched objects. She has traveled extensively, journeys which are evident in her designs, whether in the print of a fog-enveloped Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or a meandering road through the idyllic countryside.

On the Streets: Overalls Are All Over

Originally designed as protective gear to wear over your clothes, overalls have come a long way since their inception in 1891. Over the years we’ve used them for farming, factory work (women wore them in England during WWI), skiwear and kids clothes. On the runways, overalls came in (and out) of fashion in the 70s and the 90s. Now they’re here again with lots more panache.

Classic Overall

You can still find the basic overall style we’ve all come to know. Just look up and down the street. They’re classic, comfortable and trend right!

Denim-less Overall

They don’t have to be big, baggy denim or twill. Add a touch of spandex and overalls can actually show off your shape!

Shortall

What would Spring/Summer 2015 be without the cool, cut-off version of the overall? On the streets, shortalls were seen everywhere.

Shopping Strategy: The Print Coat

If there’s one on-trend layering piece you need to transition into spring, it’s the print coat. What an effortless way to freshen up last year’s wardrobe. Simply toss on one of these beautiful and expressive works of art.

The Long and the Short of It

A print coat in any length will do, from cropped to maxi and everything in between. Throw a maxi coat over your mini for contrasting proportions. A knee-length coat over the same length dress is a ladies-that-lunch must-have. A cropped jacket over a long, voluminous skirt makes it office appropriate.

Prints, Prints and More Prints!

Spring/Summer 2015’s vivid prints are as varied as the personalities who wear them. Allover florals add a vintage feel, while oversized mod prints have a 60s vibe that screams peace and love. What colors are hot for your new print coat? We say, you can’t go wrong and the more, the merrier!

Feminine Finish: Fingerless Gloves

Hands down, fingerless gloves are the prime example of technology influencing fashion. Not only are they functional for keeping hands warm and making all of our hand-held devices accessible, they’re on-trend, too. From rich leather to more casual knits, fingerless gloves have been the finishing touch to lots of cold weather ensembles on the Fall/Winter runways. We’ve found some around town this winter, as well.

Hot or Not: Lorde vs. Emma Stone

emma stone vs lord

The 2015 Golden Globes had its share of glitz and glamour as the first big awards show of the year. But a handful of stars stepped out of the norm and wore pants suits including actress Emma Stone and New Zealand singer/songwriter Lorde. Even though both looks were black, each carried off a style all her own.

Lorde made a brave, midriff-showing move wearing a Narciso Rodriguez cropped top and long, unstructured jacket. (The high-waisted trousers meant there was less to bare.) Her ensemble was bling-less to make way for the glittering statement necklace.

Stone, wearing Alber Elbaz metallic strapless lace top and black ankle length pants, would have been a bit pedestrian. But add the mother of all sashes and the look becomes red-carpet gold.

What do you think about these stars giving up their chances to wear long gowns for pants? Would you? We’d love to hear your comments!

Stella McCartney’s 2015 Pre-Fall Presentation Features Fluffy Fur-Free Fur

An outspoken advocate for ethical and environmentally friendly fashion, Stella McCartney is strongly against the use of real fur and leather in her collections. The designer’s most recent looks for pre-fall 2015 are just as cruelty-free, and fashion-forward, as her previous fur-free designs. Woven in synthetic fiber, the elegant gilets, coats, handbags and hats are all faux fur – though it’s hard to tell. Proving that fur-free fur doesn’t have to look fake, McCartney’s pre-fall presentation combines lush, alternative materials with modern style concepts.

McCartney’s self-proclaimed ‘fake fur alternative’ is so luxurious no one will even know it’s faux.

Now Trending: Colorful Eyebrows

As if especially for the release of the third in a series of The Hunger Games movies, colorful eyebrows can be seen everywhere. It was only a matter of time until the influence of Panem’s frivolous Capitol and their colorful make-up and hair showed up on Spring ’15 runways…and eyebrows were the star performers.

The answer to the color question is, “Yes!” This season’s palette is as varied as the color wheel. Any color goes! Some tinted brows became the focal point of the face, while others simply blended with equally tinted hair.
